All day, the heavy air has been whispering a gentle breeze through the leaves of the trees, telling them sweet nothings in a voice as old and seductive as nature herself. The leaves, shimmer in their beautiful rainbow colors which are just beginning to appear where once all was green. I wonder if the trees know what I know. Soon the flirtatious breeze will over power them. It may rip them from their soggy soil that smells of musty safe forest. It will send them flying much as the ocean does with boats out on the water in a hurricane. Do the trees know they will be weaponized and launched against humanity’s power grid for the next several days? I would tell them if I could. But I don’t speak their ancient language. We will see weather violence of a scale we see maybe once or twice in 100 years. Last time we were expecting a storm like this in September was over eighty years ago. <\/p>\n

I am not able to warn the trees, of the duplicity and violence of those softly whispered breezes. But, I can prepare myself and my home, Red Bird Cottage, at Wildflower Farm. Dr. Farmer Moomin, is now collecting oil and fuel for the generator so we will maintain toilets that flush and water pumping from the well to the house. This will be our first time ever setting up the generator. We have only needed it maybe one other time, but only for about a day and a half. This event could prove much worse and with a longer period of need. New England and the east coast are about to see a historic storm. The storm will use the trees it hurls about, the high winds it brings, and the flood waters as it hits in a full moon, to destroy the power that comes to our homes. This is going to get ugly. It could be hours, days, or even weeks till the power is restored to us. We just don’t know. But I saw sea gulls flying west over head. Which filled me with dread. It takes a pretty substantial storm to bring them this far west. That they are heading west from here…. Is a frightening give away of what very likely is to come over the next several days. Here, we are preparinf to return to the stone age the storm will leave behind when it clears out. Our heating, lights,\u00a0 electronics, pretty much everything runs off electricity here.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fortunately I am one of those rare people that got taken down early on in life by something I didn’t see coming. Then I had to claw my way back from death’s door without the resource of the fingernails necessary to claw…. I promised myself long ago…. I am never going through that particular hell again. A hell I should never have survived given the struggle I was facing lacking all internal reserves and wherewithal necessary to face such dire circumstances. Pieces of me died during that event, very early in my life. I made a decision, a long time ago… I am not giving up any more of myself to something that comes crashing into me. I am a homesteader. I am not one of those insane doomsday preppers. I can not be clear enough about that. I am practical. Not planning for insanity like the zombie appocolypse and the four horse men and a returning Jesus. However, stashing a little away for the winter, or for a rainy day, is something I very strongly believe in. Seems a rainy day is going to crash into us tomorrow.\u00a0 I am preparing the kerosene lamps, piling the winter wood inside a bit early so I can cook when the more standard stove ceases to function. Causing us to switch a bit early to cooking on the wood stove. Also, this way we will have heat even if we are without electricity for days or even weeks. These are just some of the steps we are taking to prepare for this storm.<\/p>\n

The storm is called a Nor Easter. It is unusual to get one this early in the autumn. It brings with it rain and flooding and high winds. It brings with it, destruction. We are not wear it is at it’s very worst, yet we are close enough that this is going to get amazingly bad most likely. So, we are putting new wicks and fresh kerosene in the oil lamps. We brought in some food in case the roads are too flooded to drive for a while. We are setting up here to ride this thing out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is going to be a long furation storm with multiple periods of flooding and massive amounts of rain. Large waves in the ocean, and high winds. We will get through it and we will be fine. But I have no doubt, these preparations and many others we are making right now, will be what carries us through safely unscathed to the other side of what will be a nightmare storm. The kind they write horror novels and make horror movies about.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I don’t know when I will be back to update this blog. I don’t know when I will have functional lights again, or if or when the roads will be drivable again. The unknown is scary in that, many in this area are not prepared and are in low lying areas of the state. Some even in the worst of it. I am bracing for deaths, and to see houses collapsing into the ocean on Plum Island and on the Cape, a place I have loved for a lifetime. The coast line, will forever be changed after this storm. That is the only thing we are certain of now.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is important, to consider, that even if this doozy doesn’t do major damage to us or our homestead, home, and life, that day is coming. Climate change, is impacting the storms. Causing them to be larger and more extreme. Seeing people and places devestated by storms and other terrible conditions and situations, was one reason we came out here. We wanted and still want to live more kindly to our environment. Do our part to save us all from the weather rage climate change brings with it. The more the climate changes, the more difficult surviving on this planet will become. This storm, is a symptom of a far larger and more devestatingly damaging problem, that will be coming for all human life over time. It will come to every corner of this planet. Every home, every family, and it will take things we are not prepared to let it have. But we are not powerless. We get to choose. How do we discard that piece of plastic we are holding. Should we get a car that is electric? Should we recycle, and reuse? This storm is our answer. It is a loud raging yes to all these questions. It says we should take steps still larger to live more gently with nature. It will shout yes at us again and again until we hear the message. We built this storm. We built the death of anyone it rips from life. We built the destruction of every home it ruins. We are the destructive heart of what is coming towards us now. But we can do better. We must do better.<\/p>\n

I will update this blog again about how we were impacted when I can.

\nStay out of the water, there are rip currents even the best swimmers will not be able to contend with.
\nPick up some extra food, and prepare for some time back in the pre electric stone age.
