The trees have grown skeletal, and the grass too has thinned out and browned some. The sky was clear today, a New England bright blue color that whispered of the cold, bright but frigid. I spent much of the day outside in the yard playing with my dogs. Finally we came back into the house that smelled of fir trees sweet oranges and warm spices. I decided to make a cup of hot chocolate to try to warm back up. I don't recommend this as more than an occasional treat because it is a lot of sugar. But every once in a while it is just too wonderful to pass up. The taste of warm chocolate as it spreads heat through your body is unlike anything else...<\/p>\n

No, I did not go get my mix from a jar bought at the store or a purchased canister. I mixed it up from scratch, which is so much easier than you would think and you get so much more for the price you would have paid to buy it as a pre-made mix.<\/p>\n

To make a single cup of hot chocolate, get unsweetened cocoa powder, and powdered sugar. An 8th of a cup of each. Mix together and pour into a mug. Heat water or milk and add it to the cup of mixed sugar and cocoa powder, once the it reaches the proper temperature. Throw in however many little mini dehydrated marshmallows as you like, garnish with a candy cane spoon during the Christmas season and enjoy it. To make 4 servings, mix 1 cup cocoa powder and 1 cup powdered sugar and put a quarter cup of your mix into each of your four cups. This is super quick and super simple but so much nicer somehow than buying the pre-made mixes.<\/p>\n

My favorite place to drink hot chocolate, is in front of one of the lit wood stoves... So as I consume and spread warmth through my body, I also heat myself up outwardly. Nothing beats this method on a cold day.<\/p>\n
